Mary, I was surprised to learn that she was born in Ireland. I mentioned that to Uncle Bob and he had quite a few stories about how she didn't want that fact widely known.
They were taking a trip to Canada, and someone said, "Ya know, Mom, they're going to ask where you were born when we cross the border." Sure enough, the guard goes around the car asking everyone their birthplace. All eyes were on her when she lifted her chin and declared, "Bronx, New York!" (I think that's how the tale went. UB is always welcome to correct me.)
